The cooling fan assembly in 1986-1994 models is controlled by a temperature switch in the radiator. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature, the switch activates the fan. In 1986-1989 models, the switch completes the ground circuit for the fan motor, while in 1990-1994 models, it powers the cooling fan relay control circuit. From 1995 onwards, the ECM controls the cooling fan relay, using data from the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. To test the fan motor, connect it directly to the battery. If it doesn't work, replace the motor. If the motor is fine but doesn't work normally, the issue could be the coolant temperature switch, cooling fan relay, ECM or wiring harness. Test the temperature switch by bridging the terminals of the switch harness connector. If the fan works, the switch is likely defective. To replace, remove the radiator and fan, detach the fan blade assembly from the motor shaft, and remove the fan motor from the shroud. Reinstall in reverse order.
