Engine mounts are hardly noticed by the drivers; however, if the mounts are bad or damaged they should be replaced to avoid transmission of vibrations to other essential parts of the vehicle such as the driveline. Start by lifting the front part of the car and putting it on jack stands in the appropriate positions. To effectively inspect the mounts raise the engine off of the mounts by placing a jack under the oil pan and using a large block of wood between the jack and the engine but make sure that the block of wood is not positioned over the drain plug. Many of the mounts have cracks, hardened rubber or delamination from the metal plates and splits are MD, use a drop light or flashlight to have a good view rather than putting your hand where you cannot see. If any are obvious, replace the mount(s). Test for mobility of the insulator and the metal bracket by inserting a large pry bar or screwdriver to get between the insulator and the metal bracket and try to pry them apart; any freedom indicates that they should be replaced. Use preservative to the mounts as a measure of preventing the rate of erosion to increase. For replacement, again lift the vehicle if needed and support the engine. Leverage off the bolts at both mount and bracket locations to eliminate them; for the body-to-bracket bolts in the transaxle, you need to unscrew the protective caps; and the crossmember-to-bracket bolts can be reached through the holes on the underside of the crossmember. The process of installation involves doing the opposite of the removal, which guarantees the use of NEW mounting bolts, and their proper tightness.
