Crankshaft can only be taken off if the engine itself has been pulled out of the car; increasing one's belief that several other parts like the flywheel, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, oil pan, oil pump body, oil filter, and the piston/connecting rod assemblies have been removed. Before making the removal, you should check the amount of crankshaft end play by placing a dial indicator on the side of the crankshaft. Pull the crankshaft towards the rear and set the indicator to zero and then the pull the crankshaft to the front and observe the reading which should be from 0.003 to 0.010-inch. In case dial indicator is not available feeler gauge can also be used to measure clearance. Unfit the main bearing cap bolts, and slightly using a soft blow on the caps you can remove them without dropping the bearing inserts. Slowly remove the crankshaft upwards, with a help of the hoist if possible, and re-attach the main bearing caps back on with the inserts facing forward, pointing at the front. To install clean up and inspect the engine block and crankshaft and then lay the new upper main bearing inserts in the block to check the alignment of the oil holes. Subsequently, clean the crankshaft and check the main ball bearing oil clearance with Plastigage, which should be within regulations. If the given clearance is not correct, ensure that no any dirt was included in the measurement procedure and if there is, then it will be right to replace the bearing inserts. Following removal of Plastigage material from the bearing locations, apply a coat of oil to the bearing contacting surfaces and replace the crank Journal along with the caps for the main bearings. After that retighten the bolts in a cross wise pattern and again measure the crankshaft end play. Last of all, turn the crankshaft to check for any and remedy any forgery, and fit a fresh rear main seal.
