The accumulator or receiver-drier serves as a refrigerant reservoir and filter/dehumidifier. 1986-1989 and 1995-later models use a receiver-drier, while 1990-1994 models use an accumulator. For 1986-1989 models, the receiver-drier is at the left of the condenser; 1995-1999 models have it on the right; 2000-later models integrate it with the condenser assembly. A vertical tube on the condenser's left carries the dessicant bag. The 1990-1994 accumulator mounts on the left firewall. Discharge and recover the system at a professional facility.For 1986-1999 models:Removal:Unplug the pressure switch connector. Detach the refrigerant lines from the receiver-drier (use a spring-lock coupling tool for 1990-1994 models). Cap the fittings immediately. Unbolt and remove the accumulator or receiver-drier. Installation:Fit new O-rings on the lines, lubricate them with refrigerant oil, and install them. Install new fitting O-rings. Refrain from removing the sealing caps until ready to reconnect lines. Be cautious with inlet and outlet connections. For new receiver-driers, add appropriate refrigerant oil. Complete by having the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested.For 2000 and later models:On these models, the receiver-drier is part of the condenser assembly. Replacement involves replacing the dessicant bag. Remove the condenser, unscrew the threaded plug from the receiver-drier using an Allen wrench (avoid impact wrench use), and remove the filter and old dessicant bag. Inspect the dessicant tube and filter; clean or replace as needed. Lubricate a new O-ring, install it on a new plug, and insert the new dessicant bag into the tube. Screw on the new plug immediately. Perform the process in reverse for installation. Have the air conditioning system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested after installation.
