Q:
How do you replace the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit assembly in a fuel tank? Posted by Customer
A:
Once you have removed the fuel pump/fuel level sensor from the fuel tank, you can replace the entire assembly or disassemble it and replace the fuel inlet strainer, fuel pump, or fuel level sensor. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly from the fuel tank. Drain any residual gasoline from the fuel pump/fuel level sensor, then place it on a clean workbench. Make sure the work area is well ventilated because gasoline will be evaporating from the pump/sensor for a while. Check the strainer for clogging. If in doubt, replace it. Unclip the fuel pump from the filter/sender assembly. Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly. Install the fuel pump/fuel level sensor in the fuel tank.

Q:
How to check the fuel pump and fuel pressure? Posted by Customer
A:
General checks include ensuring there is enough fuel in the tank and verifying that the fuel pump is running by listening for a whirring noise when the ignition is turned on. If there is no sound, check the EFI fuse, circuit opening or EFI relay, and the fuel pump cut switch. If the fuse and relay are fine, check the wiring to the fuel pump. To test the fuel pressure, relieve the system pressure and use a fuel pressure gauge and T-fitting to connect it between the fuel supply line and the fuel rail. For return-type fuel systems, turn off accessories and turn the ignition switch to ON to check the fuel pump operation and pressure. If the pressure is high, check the vacuum hose and fuel return hose for restrictions or leaks. If the pressure is low, pinch the fuel return hose and if the pressure increases, replace the fuel pressure regulator. To check the regulator's operation, disconnect the vacuum hose and observe the pressure increase. If it doesn't, check for vacuum at the hose. Relieve the pressure, disconnect the battery cable, remove the gauge, and reconnect the fuel supply hose. For returnless fuel systems, measure the fuel pressure while the engine is idling and warm. If the pressure is low, inspect the fuel supply hose and line for obstructions and replace the fuel filter. If the pressure is still low, replace the fuel pump/fuel pressure regulator. If the pressure is high, replace the fuel pump/fuel pressure regulator and have the fuel system diagnosed if the pressure remains high. After the test, relieve the pressure, disconnect the battery cable, and remove the gauge. Finally, reconnect the battery cable and check for fuel leaks.

Q:
How do you remove and install the Fuel Level Sensor and Fuel Pump? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rear seat, cut the carpet and padding below it to access the fuel tank. Remove the fuel pump/fuel level sensor floor service hole cover and disconnect the wiring. Relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the fuel lines. Remove the retaining bolts and carefully lift the fuel pump/fuel level sensor assembly from the fuel tank. Inspect and clean the fuel pump inlet strainer if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal.
