Many electrical accessories in the vehicle, such as the fuel injection system, horns, starter, cooling fans, and fog lamps, utilize relays to transmit electrical signals to the components. Relays operate using a low-current control circuit to open and close a high-current power circuit. A defective relay will prevent the associated component from functioning properly. Various relays are located in the engine compartment fuse box and other areas throughout the vehicle. If a faulty relay is suspected, it can be removed and tested, either by following a specific procedure or by a dealer service department or repair shop, with defective relays needing replacement as a unit. Most relays have two terminals for the control circuit, which connects to the relay coil, and other terminals for the power circuit, which connect internally when the control circuit is energized. Some relays may be marked to identify the control and power circuit terminals. To test a relay, connect an ohmmeter across the power circuit terminals; continuity should not be indicated. For a typical four-terminal normally open relay, connect the ohmmeter to the power circuit terminals, and continuity will show no indication until battery power and ground are applied to the control circuit terminals, at which point the relay will click and continuity will be indicated. By connecting a fused jumper wire from one control circuit terminal to the positive battery terminal and another from the other control circuit terminal to ground, the relay should click and show continuity on the meter. If polarity is critical, swapping the jumper wires may be necessary if the relay does not click. If the relay does not pass the test, it should be replaced.

To test a relay, connect an ohmmeter across the two terminals of the power circuit. Continuity should not be indicated. For a typical four-terminal normally open relay, connect an ohmmeter to the two terminals of the power circuit; the meter should indicate continuity when the relay is energized and no continuity when it is not. Then, connect a fused jumper wire between one control circuit terminal and the positive battery terminal, and another jumper wire between the other control circuit terminal and ground. The relay should click, and continuity should be indicated on the meter. If it doesn't click, try swapping the jumper wires on the control circuit terminals.

On most relays, two terminals are for the relay control circuit (connecting to the relay coil), and the other terminals are for the power circuit (connected together when the control-circuit coil is energized).
