    Q:
How do you replace the rear brake shoes and adjust the parking brake system on Hyundai Elantra? Posted by Customer
    A:
Models equipped with rear disc brakes utilize either a cable actuator system attached to the caliper for certain years or parking brake shoes for others to activate the parking brake system. Begin by removing the rear brake discs. Inspect the thickness of the lining material on the shoes; if it has worn down to 1/32-inch or less, replacement is necessary. The hub and bearing assembly can be removed, although it is possible to replace the shoes without doing so, albeit with limited working room. Clean the brake parts with brake system cleaner, then remove the lower return spring, lift out the star-wheel adjuster mechanism while noting its orientation, and remove the upper return spring. Release the front hold-down spring and lift off the front shoe, followed by the rear shoe assembly. Clean the backing plate thoroughly and lightly lubricate the contact surfaces with high-temperature grease before fitting the new rear shoe and installing the hold-down retainer. Repeat the process for the front shoe, install its hold-down, and the upper return spring. Clean and lubricate the adjuster, install it in its original orientation, and then install the lower return spring while rotating the adjuster for proper clearance. Reinstall the brake discs and remove the hole plugs to adjust the parking brake shoe clearance by turning the adjuster star wheel until the shoes contact the discs, ensuring no drag when the disc is turned. Install the brake caliper, tightening the bolts securely, then install the wheel and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque. Finally, set the parking brake with about 45 pounds of force and count the number of clicks; it should be about five clicks, and adjustments should be made if necessary.

    Q:
How do you properly replace rear brake shoes and ensure correct installation on Hyundai Elantra? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Block the front wheels to prevent rolling, then remove the rear wheels and release the parking brake. Remove the rear wheel bearing cap, spindle nut, and washer, then slide the hub/drum assembly straight off the spindle. Clean the brake assembly with brake cleaner and allow it to dry, positioning a drain pan underneath to catch residue, avoiding the use of compressed air to blow off brake dust. Unhook the adjuster spring, remove the adjuster lever pawl, and detach the upper and lower return springs from the brake shoes. Push down on the hold-down spring, turn it 90 degrees to align its slot with the pin blade, and remove it. Lift off the leading brake shoe, remove the adjuster screw assembly, and detach the hold-down spring from the trailing brake shoe before removing the shoe and disconnecting the parking brake cable. Connect the lower return spring to the brake shoes, install the leading shoe onto the backing plate ensuring it engages correctly with the wheel cylinder, and install the hold-down spring. Lubricate the threads of the adjuster screw assembly with high-temperature grease before installation, connect the upper return spring, position the adjuster lever pawl, and install the adjuster spring. Replace all four rear brake shoes simultaneously, working on one brake assembly at a time to avoid mixing parts. Ensure the brake shoes are retracted for easy drum installation, and check the drum for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots, which may require machining at an automotive shop if they cannot be removed with fine emery cloth. Resurfacing is recommended whenever a brake job is done to prevent out-of-round drums; if drums are excessively worn, new ones will be necessary. If not resurfacing, remove glazing with sandpaper or emery cloth using a swirling motion. Install the brake drum and bearing unit, washer, and a new spindle nut, then tighten the nut. Mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. Depress the brake pedal several times, then drive the vehicle backwards and forwards while applying the brakes forcefully to bring the brake shoes into proper adjustment. Check brake operation carefully before driving in traffic.
