To replace the rear brake shoes, start by removing the brake discs and inspecting the shoe lining thickness; replace if worn down to 1/32-inch or less. If desired, remove the hub and bearing assembly, though it's feasible to perform the procedure without this step. Clean brake parts with brake system cleaner. Follow the provided illustrations for step-by-step replacement: remove return springs, retainer plate, spread shoes, take out strut, remove star-wheel mechanism, disconnect shoe hold-down springs and retainers, eliminate lower spring, and detach shoe from parking brake cable. Apply brake lubricant to backing plates and star-wheel threads, then install shoes, springs, and retainer components in the correct order as shown in the illustrations. Tighten the hub nut and stake it to the spindle. Install the brake disc, adjust parking brake shoe clearance by turning adjuster star wheel, then install hole plugs. Proceed to install the brake caliper, wheel, and tighten lug nuts. Set parking brake with around 45 pounds of force and count clicks; it should be six or seven clicks-if not, adjust the parking brake.
