Q:
How to relieve fuel system pressure and remove a fuel tank? Posted by Customer
A:
To relieve the fuel system pressure, remove the fuel filler cap. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the wiring and hoses from the fuel pump/fuel level sending unit assembly. Drain the fuel into an approved container by removing the drain plug or siphoning it using a hand pump siphon. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Place a floor jack with a block of wood under the fuel tank. Remove the nuts from the tank retaining straps and lower the straps. Lower the tank to gain access to the top. Disconnect the remaining hoses from the tank. Carefully lower the tank to the ground. For installation, reverse the removal steps and ensure that the fuel tank strap bolts are tightened securely.

Q:
What precautions should be taken when repairing the fuel tank or filler neck? Posted by Customer
A:
Any repairs to the fuel tank or filler neck should be done by a professional with experience in this critical and potentially dangerous work. Even after cleaning and flushing of the fuel system, explosive fumes can remain and ignite during repair of the tank. If the fuel tank is removed from the vehicle, it should not be placed in an area where sparks or open flames could ignite the fumes coming out of the tank. Be especially careful inside garages where a gas-type appliance is located, because it could cause an explosion.
