The purpose for the evaporative emission control system is to keep fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere. It includes a canister, water vent valve, purge control valve, thermo valve, overfill limiter and specialty designed fuel cap. When the engine is off, the canister will absorb and store the vapors of the fuel system whereas when it's started; these vapors go through various valves and lines into intake manifold. Bowl vent valve controls carburetor float bowl vapors. The carbureted engine purge control valve is closed during idle to prevent vaporized fuel from entering the intake manifold. The Hyundai Accent Canister Purge Valve directs trapped fuel vapor into the engine so it can be burned in the engine rather than vented into the atmosphere. Sitting between the charcoal canister and intake manifold, the Canister Purge Valve opens when engine vacuum is present and allows fresh air to sweep hydrocarbons from the canister into the combustion chambers, which reduces smog-forming emissions and fuel odors. Throughout Hyundai development, refinements have been made to the valve response time for better efficiency and cleaner running. Early versions on the Accent line were simple vacuum-controlled units that opened automatically once vacuum rose above a threshold.
