- Q: How to remove and install rear shock absorbers and coil springs on 1994 and eariier Hyundai Excel?A:Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. The jackstands must be placed under the vehicle at the lifting points, not under the rear axle assembly. Remove the rear wheels. Position a floor jack under the spring pocket area of the suspension arm and raise it just enough to feel resistance from the spring. Remove the shock absorber lower mounting bolt. Remove the upper mounting bolt and nut and detach the shock absorber. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Be sure to tighten the fasteners securely. Detach any brake hose brackets and, if equipped, the ABS wheel speed sensor harness brackets, from the rear axle. Slowly lower the jack until the coil spring is fully extended, then guide the spring out of the mounts. Before installing the coil spring, check the upper seat for cracks, hardening and general deterioration. Replace it if necessary. Check the bump stop on the suspension arm for cracks and wear and replace it if necessary. It's retained to the arm by one nut on the under side of the arm. Check the coil spring for cracks, chips, excessive rust and deformation. Replace the spring if any of these conditions exist. Place the coil spring in the seat on the suspension arm. Install the upper seat, making sure that it is positioned properly. Raise the floor jack high enough to enable the lower end of the shock absorber to be reconnected. Tighten the bolt securely. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle. Tighten the lug nuts to the torque.
