    Q:
What precautions should be taken when performing a timing belt and variable timing sprocket replacement procedure on 1999 through 2005 V6 Hyundai Sonata? Posted by Customer
    A:
Prudence is called for as the timing system is highly intricate; a misstep is fatal to the engine; this process should be ideally handled by experts only and in case of doubt, consult an expert. Start with the removal of the negative cable, then proceed to stripping off the engine cover and the drivebell. Next, it is necessary to pull out the pulleys of the power steering pump, idler, belt tensioner, crank Shaft, and the two timing belt covers. Bring the engine at the top dead center of the number one cylinder and make proper alignment of the timing marks. If the belt is to be re-used, direction and alignment should be noted. First, identify the timing belt tensioner and timing belt and escort them and then D' remove the camshaft sprockets with the help of hex portion of the camshaft. Before that, the belt should be checked for oil, dirt as well as other visible signs, checking for the cracks or broken teeth, and sprockets as well as pulleys should also be inspected for any signs of wear. Oh check the tensioner foe oil leakage an test for a leakdown; change it if the pushrood moves. Idler pulleys should move without much friction. Clean the timing belt area and fit the camshaft sprockets, the camshaft sprockets bolts must then be tightened. Center all the camshaft sprocket marks to the engine marks, loosen the timing belt tensioner pushrod, and slowly apply pressure on it before pinning it. Put the timing belt tensioner into place and tighten all the bolts, rotate the crankshaft and approximate the timing mark to place the timing belt over the sprockets and pulley in the correct manner. Centre all the timing marks, remove the tensioner pin and rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise slowly through two revolutions at most, whenever, the ordeal meets with some resistance. After leaving the engine at TDC for five minutes, the protrusion of the tensioner rod and measurements should be compared with the new one; if it fails, replace the tensioner. Last but not the least, replace all components which were removed herewith and with reference to the above-stated regulation, ensure that they are replaced in reverse order.
