Check the main bearing caps to see if they're marked to indicate their locations, which should be marked consecutively from front to rear. If they're not marked, do so. Loosen the main bearing cap bolts 1/4-turn at a time until they can be removed by hand, and note if any studs are used to ensure they are returned to their original locations when the crankshaft is reinstalled.

Insert the rubber gasket into the grooves on the top side of the lower crankcase, apply a continuous bead of Three-bond #1217 liquid sealer to the sealing surface, and install the lower crankcase onto the cylinder block.

Remove all burrs from the crankshaft oil holes with a stone, file, or scraper. The oil holes should be chamfered to prevent sharp edges from gouging or scratching the new bearings.
