Ensure you have the activation code if the vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft radio before performing procedures requiring battery disconnection. Disconnect the battery's negative terminal cable. Drain the cooling system and, if the coolant is still good, save it for reuse. Remove the accessory drivebelt. Loosen and remove water pump pulley bolts using a chain or strap wrench, then remove the pulley. Take off the alternator and note the alternator bracket's position on the water pump for reinstallation. Remove alternator bracket bolts (which are also water pump bolts) and remaining water pump bolts. On models except 2010 and earlier 1.8L and 2012 and earlier 2.0L, disconnect the water pump coolant inlet pipe connection hose and detach the pipe from the block. Remove the pipe from the water pump mounting boss and discard the old O-ring. Clean bolt threads and threaded holes, and ensure the new pump matches the old one. Remove old gasket material using a scraper, and clean mating surfaces with lacquer thinner or acetone. Attach the new gasket or O-ring to the pump's gasket mating surface using Gasgacinch or similar adhesive. Attach the pump and gasket to the engine, tighten bolts finger-tight, reposition the alternator bracket, and install the remaining water pump mounting bolts incrementally. Insert a new O-ring on the coolant inlet pipe, lubricate with coolant, and connect it to the water pump mounting boss, securing it to the block. Reattach the connection hose and tighten the hose clamp. Install the alternator, water pump pulley, and accessory drivebelt, tightening bolts securely. Refill the cooling system, check drivebelt tension, reconnect the negative battery cable, start the engine, and inspect for leaks.

A faulty water pump can cause engine damage due to overheating. Three ways to check the pump are: squeezing the upper radiator hose while the engine is running, which should result in a pressure surge if the pump is working; checking the weep hole for leaks, which indicates a seal failure; and listening for a howling sound from the front of the engine, which suggests bearing failure. Also, if the water pump pulley can be moved up and down, the shaft or bearings are worn. Replace a defective pump immediately.
