When replacing brake shoes, it's important to also replace the shoe-to-shoe automatic adjuster (if present) and hold-down springs, as these components can lose tension over time and cause the shoes to drag and wear excessively due to heating/cooling cycles. To begin the process, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel and brake drum on earlier models, or follow the procedure for 1995 and later models. Clean the brake assembly and avoid using compressed air to blow off brake dust. For 1986 through 1988 models, pry off the clip spring, unhook the shoe retainer spring, and remove the shoe-to-shoe spring. Take out the shoe hold-down springs, disconnect the parking brake cable, separate the trailing shoe, pry off the C-clip from the parking brake lever pivot pin, remove the spring from the adjuster actuator, and detach the parking brake lever. Transfer the lever to the new trailing shoe, secure it with the C-clip, and reattach the adjuster and spring. Remove the C-clip from the leading shoe, clean and grease the adjuster screw, attach it to the new leading shoe, and secure it with the C-clip. Apply a light coat of grease to the brake shoe contact areas on the backing plate. Reconnect the parking brake cable, position the shoes on the backing plate, install the hold-down springs, connect the shoe-to-shoe spring, and secure the clip spring. For 1989, 1990, and some 1991 models, unhook the automatic adjuster spring, spread the shoes apart, remove the adjuster, unhook the shoe-to-shoe spring, and remove the hold-down springs. Clean and lubricate the adjuster screw, apply grease to the backing plate contact areas, transfer the parking brake lever, reconnect the parking brake cable, and install the shoes, adjuster, lever, and springs. For some 1991 and all 1992 and later models, remove the brake drum, spindle cap, spindle hub nut, and bearing washer. Clean the brake assembly and replace brake shoe components. Ensure proper lubrication and reassemble the brake shoe assembly, transferring the parking brake lever as necessary. Reinstall the spindle hub, bearing washer, and spindle hub nut, tightening the nut to torque. Check the drum for defects and install it before adjusting the rear wheel bearings, mounting the wheel, and lowering the vehicle. Tighten lug nuts, cycle the parking brake lever, pump the brake pedal, and test brake operation before driving.
