A: When replacing brake shoes, be sure to also replace the shoe-to-shoe automatic adjuster and hold-down springs to prevent excessive wear. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the vehicle, and removing the wheel and brake drum. Clean the brake assembly and remove the shoe retainer spring, shoe-to-shoe spring, and hold-down springs. Unplug the Parking Brake Cable. Remove the C-clip, and remove the parking brake lever. Transfer the lever to the new shoe, reattach the adjuster and spring, and apply grease to the brake shoe contact areas. Reconnect the parking brake cable, install the shoes and springs. For later models, remove the brake drum, spindle cap, spindle hub nut, and bearing washer. Replace brake shoe components, reassemble the brake shoe assembly, and reinstall the spindle hub. Check the drum for defects, adjust the rear wheel bearings, mount the wheel, and lower the vehicle. Tighten lug nuts, cycle the parking brake lever, pump the brake pedal, and test brake operation.
