Q: How to remove and install parking brake cables?
A: This procedure applies to both the right and left cables. Remove the center console. On 1986 through 1989 models, completely unscrew the cable adjusting nut from the cable to be removed. On 1989 and later models, turn the single cable adjusting nut on the equalizer to allow slack in the cable to be removed. Loosen the rear wheel lug nuts on the side of the vehicle on which the cable is to be removed. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Place blocks in front of the front wheels. Remove the wheel. Remove the brake drum and shoes. Unhook the cable end from the parking brake lever on the Brake Shoe. Remove the clip that secures the cable to the brake backing plate and pull the cable through the plate. Unhook the cable from the clips on the suspension trailing arm. Remove the rear seat cushion. Lift up the carpet, unscrew the cable clamp bolt and free the cable from the clamp. Pull the cable and grommet through the floor pan into the interior. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. After the cable is installed, adjust the parking brake.
