Hyundai 36100-22860 Starter Assembly

To determine if the engine is a starter, some vehicles will require removing the exhaust pipe(s) or frame cross member. There may be situations where even detaching engine mounts and raising it slightly would make removal of a starter easier. Battery cable from negative terminal should be disconnected. On fuel-injected models, remove the air cleaner assembly. For those with 1990 and 1994 designs, remove Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve if it is present. Disconnect vehicle speedometer cable from transaxle on 1990 through 1999 models and set it aside. The shift cable must be disconnected in some cases as well. Raise the vehicle securely using jack stands for support. Loosen nut and disconnect battery cable from starter motor. Wire needs to be removed from solenoid Remove electrical connector from spade terminal at starter solenoid, then unscrew nut and remove battery cable from B+ terminal Where applicable on later models, remove the EGR valve. Remove mounting bolts of starter motor while unbolting them so that you can take out starter motor too. Installation is reverse of removal; tighten screws firmly into their correct positions again.

To troubleshoot circuit problems, you can: Disconnect battery leads, starter/solenoid wiring, and engine/transmission ground strap. Clean the connections, reconnect them, and use a voltmeter or test light to verify full battery voltage at the solenoid's positive lead connection and ensure a sound ground. Apply petroleum jelly to battery terminals to prevent corrosion.
