The home mechanic can remove and disassemble the head, do the initial cleaning and inspection, then reassemble and deliver it to an automotive machine shop for the actual service work. Doing the inspection will enable the mechanic to see the condition of the head and valvetrain components and ensure they know what work and new parts are required when dealing with the automotive machine shop.

To check and adjust the clearance on these engines, you should: Position the number 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke. Measure the clearances of the indicated valves with feeler gauges and record out-of-spec measurements. Turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and measure the remaining valves. With the camshaft lobe above the first valve to be adjusted pointing upward, depress the lifter with a special lifter tool. Remove the adjusting shim and measure its thickness with a micrometer. Calculate the correct thickness of a replacement shim using a formula. Select a shim with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated valve clearance. Install the shim into position using a light coat of motor oil for lubrication. Recheck the valve clearances. Reinstall the valve cover, spark plugs, and other components.
