Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) helps in minimizing the emission of hydrocarbons due to crankcase vapors to the atmosphere; Fresh air is circulated through PCV valve from the air cleaner goes to crankcase, mixes blow-by gases and is sent to the intake manifold through the PCV system. The major parts of the PCV system are the PCV valve, which is mounted on the valve cover and both hoses; one of the hose links the air intake duct to the valve cover housing where it provides fresh air to the crankcase and the other links the valve cover PCV valve to the air intake plenum where it carries the crankcase emission of the engine. During the deceleration and idle when intake vaccum is high, the PCV valve minimizes the amount of crankcase emissions for richness of the mixture to achieve good idle quality. On the other hand, when the throttle valve is open during acceleration and steady cruising speed the PCV valve opens further to allow the flow. When there are other irregular operations like damaged piston rings then the blow-by gases have direct access to the crankcase vent hose then to the take-air duct. Operation checks and replacement of the PCV valve and the filter are among the required regular services.

The PCV system diverts the blow by gases from the crankcase through it's PCV valve and hose back to the intake manifold where they are burned in the engine. It consists of a hose leading from the valve cover to the intake duct, a PCV valve and a hose connecting it to the air intake plenum. The PCV valve is situated in the valve cover. Detach the hose from the valve then unscrew it from its position on top of the valve cover and finally reconnect that hose. During normal operating temperature, place your finger over either of them (i.e., hoses or opening) while idling; however when there is no vacuum present, ensure that one checks for any blocked or deteriorated hoses as well as manifold port. Finally turn off your engine and shake your PCV Valve listening for a rattle sound; If it does not rattle replace it with a new one. When purchasing a replacement PCV valve always be sure that it is meant for your specific vehicle model, engine size and compare your old valve with new one so as to ensure their compatibility with each other.

If air will not pass through the PCV valve in one direction, you should replace it with a new one.

One symptom of a clogged PCV system is leaking engine seals. When crankcase vapors cannot escape, pressure builds up inside the engine, leading to leaks in the seals.
