Before the inspection process can be performed it is necessary to wash the piston/connecting rod assemblies and before reusing the pistons they should be provided with new piston rings. The existing rings should be removed with a piston ring installation tool, in order not to damage the pistons. Every speck of carbon must be scraped off the top of the piston using bare hand with a wire brush or fine emery cloth after most of it has been loosened and because the material used in making pistons is soft, a wire brush mounted in a drill motor should not be used. For the removal of carbon deposits from the ring grooves there exists a piston ring groove cleaning tool, but in their absence one could always use a fragment of the old ring, being careful in the process not to take out the metal of the groove or damage it in some way. During cleaning, the procedure may state that the piston/rod assemblies should be cleaned with solvent and compressed air dried with protection of the eyes which should also ensure the oil return holes are clear. If the pistons and cylinder walls are undamaged and the engine block is not rebored new pistons may not be required but new piston rings should always be fitted during a rebuild. Every single piston will have to be checked for crackling, scoring, scuffing, holes and burn areas since these are signs of overheating or abnormal combustion; thus, the cooling and lubrication systems need to be checked thoroughly. According to the type of corrosion present, it is noticeable that the coolant leaked and it has to be examined to avoid a reoccurrence of the same in the newly reconstructed engine. Measurement of piston ring side clearance will be done and feeler gauge is used to measure as many spots as possible on the groove to fit the right ring for the right groove, if the clearance is beyond the set limit then the new piston is needed. The Piston to bore clearance needs be determined by comparisons of the bore and the piston diameter with the correct matching ; the sizes are to be measured at certain points. The amount of the land is derived from the difference between the bore diameter and the piston diameter; if the former is larger than the latter and the clearance exceeds standard size, the block will have to be rebored having new pistons and rings put in. Piston pin-to-rod and piston clearances should be checked with the assistance of twisting the piston and the rod in different directions; and if one is felt loose, well that denotes an aspect that needs to be remedied due to excessive wear. If the pistons are to be separated from the connecting rods, commonly for replacement, it should be done with help of an automotive machine shop, and the connecting rods should be examined for bend or twist. Lastly, it is required to check the connecting rods for cracks and other kinds of damages; old bearing inserts should be temporarily removed to allow them to be cleaned as well as checked; if an object was rebuilt because of the knock connecting piston, new or rebored connecting rods should be installed.
