  Q: How do you check the power brake booster?

  A: To check the power brake booster, start the engine and depress the pedal to ensure it goes down slightly. Then, depress the Brake Pedal multiple times with the engine running and check for any changes in the pedal reserve distance. Start the engine and turn it off after a minute or two, and depress the brake pedal slowly. If the pedal goes down farther initially but gradually rises after subsequent depressions, the booster is airtight. Additionally, depress the brake pedal while the engine is running and stop the engine with the pedal depressed. If there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding it for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. When removing the booster, it is recommended to replace it with a new or rebuilt one rather than disassembling it. To remove the booster, first remove the Brake Master Cylinder and pull the proportioning valve and bracket forward. On newer models with ABS, disconnect Brake Lines and retaining brackets to the ABS HECU unit if necessary. Locate the pushrod clevis connecting the booster to the brake pedal and remove the cotter pin and clevis pin, then unscrew the booster mounting nuts. Disconnect the hose leading from the engine to the booster, being careful not to damage it. Remove the four nuts and washers holding the brake booster to the firewall, and slide the booster straight out until the studs clear the holes. When installing a new booster, check the pushrod clearance by measuring dimensions A, B, and C, and calculate the pushrod clearance. Adjust the pushrod length as necessary to achieve the correct clearance. After the final installation of the master cylinder, brake hoses, and lines, adjust the brake pedal height and freeplay, and bleed the system.
