Block the front wheels and loosen the rear wheel lug nuts before raising the rear of the vehicle and securely supporting it on jackstands. For models with rear drum brakes, remove the brake shoes and disconnect the cable end from the lever on the trailing brake shoe. Depress the tangs on the cable casing retainer and pass the cable through the backing plate using needle-nose pliers or a properly sized box-end wrench to compress all the tangs simultaneously. A small screw-type hose clamp can also be used to tighten around the tangs, allowing the cable to be passed through the hole after removing the clamp.
