Each and every make has airbags popularly known as the Supplemental Restraint System or SRS which help to mitigate severe impacts or fatalities on the driver and front seat occupants in case of a head on or frontal impact crash. This system comprises impact sensors, the driver side air bag module placed at the center of the steering wheel, the passengers' air bag module placed at the rear part of the glove compartment and the sensing and diagnostic module installed at the middle of the floor pan. The airbag module commonly referred to as the cushion and inflater unit is fitted on the steering wheel and on receiving electrical impulses; it inflates almost instantly. Passenger's air bag is slightly bigger than the driver's air bag, located in the inner part of the instrument panel near the glove box and has the textured surface top cover separated into two parts that open up in case of an inflation. Other models also have airbags on side positions of the back of the seats for protection from severe side impacts; curtain, on the other hand, inflate when the car is side impacted. Sensing and diagnostic module supplies current to the airbag during an accident and activates a check of the system every time when the vehicle is started, the AIR BAG light should come on if it is working correctly. When in proximity of the steering wheel or SRS components the following measures have to be observed: the wheels are pointed straight ahead, the key is turned to the LOCK position, the negative battery terminal is disconnected and one has to wait for 2 minutes while the backup power support discharges. It is highly recommended to prevent the airbag opening from being directed towards the SI when deploying an airbag module and not to set it on a surface with the opening downwards. Any SRS component is not allowed to be measured for resistance, while using electrical welding equipment on a vehicle having air bag requires that the electrical connectors must be disconnected. A vehicle's live airbags must not be discarded; they must be taken back to a dealer service section or a qualified repair centre for proper deployment and disposal. Regarding the removal and installation of the driver's air bag module and clock spring some procedure has to be followed where as for other modules it is advisable to involve professionals.
