To replace the shift cable, the first step is to firstly, remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Next, unscrew the shifter assembly to be able to see the tip of the shift cable. Pull out the retaining pin at the end of the cable, now unscrew the clip which holds the cable housing to the shifter bracket. Pass the cable through the instrument panel area and the grommet of the firewall as well as disconnecting it from the various retainers and parts that interfere. Last but not least, pull out the buckle from the lever at the transaxle and unplug the cable from your car, to install it, the procedure is reversed after that and should be noted that you have to adjust your new cable. For adjustment turn the lock screws that connect the interlock cables to the shifter bracket while applying the brake pedal. Turn the lever into the Park position and confirm that the ignition key is in the Off position. Steady the key lock cable cam that should be situated by the detent pin and correctly position the shift lock cable cam. Depress the lower shift lock cable as far as possible and fasten the self-threading screw which narrows the cable away from the shifter Similarly, pull the upper key lock cable towards the shifter and then fasten its screw. Add all other components and engage the parking brake After all the parking brake components have been installed, perform and test the vehicle in each gear position to check the adjustment, including making sure that the vehicle cannot be shifted out of Park without the key being On and the brake pedal pressed, and the key will not turn to the Lock position unless the shifter is in Park.
