To replace the shift cable, first disconnect it from the negative battery terminal. Disassemble the shifter assembly to access the end of the shift cable. For models from 2005 and earlier, remove the retaining pin from the end of the cable and detach the clip securing the cable housing to the shifter bracket. Feed the cable through the instrument panel area and the grommet in the firewall, then disconnect it from retainers and any interfering components. Disconnect the cable from the lever at the transaxle by removing the nut from the shift lever and the C-clip from the bracket, then remove the cable from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to adjust the new cable afterward. For adjustment, set the Transmission Range sensor, place the shifter and transaxle in the Neutral position with the cable disconnected, and adjust the cable for connection to the transaxle lever when gently pushed. Verify proper operation in all ranges, ensuring the engine starts only in Park and Reverse. For interlock cables on models from 2010 and earlier, remove the console cover if not already done, loosen the screws securing the interlock cables to the shifter bracket, and shift the lever into the Park position while ensuring the key is in the Off position. Confirm the key lock cable cam and shift lock cable cam are correctly positioned, tighten the self-tapping screws for both cables, and after reinstalling any remaining components, apply the parking brake and test the vehicle in each gear position to ensure correct adjustment, confirming the vehicle cannot shift out of Park without the key in the On position and the brake pedal depressed, and that the key cannot turn to the Lock position unless the shifter is in Park.
