Look for tears, cracks, and loose clamps. Replace any boots that show evidence of cracks or leaking lubricant.

With the vehicle on the ground and the front wheels pointed straight ahead, gently rock the steering wheel back and forth.

The basic cleaning and checking procedure is the same for all joints. 1. Remove the driveaxle (see Section 17). 2. Mount the driveaxle in a vise with wood lined jaws to prevent damage. Check for excessive play and smooth operation of each CV joint. If a boot is torn, disassemble, clean, and inspect for damage. 3. Use a small screwdriver to pry the retaining tabs of the clamps up to loosen them. 4. Carefully pry up the edge of the outer boot and push it away from the CV joint. Remove the inner CV joint boot and slide the housing off the joint. 5. Mark the tripod and axleshaft for proper reassembly. 6. Remove the tripod joint snap-ring with snap-ring pliers. 7. Use a hammer and brass punch to drive the tripod joint from the driveaxle. 8. If not already done, remove both boots. Do NOT disassemble the outboard CV joint.

Equalize the pressure inside the boot by inserting a small, dull screwdriver between the boot and the outer race. Tighten and secure the boot clamps, ensuring they are properly installed.
