This may be because, because of a Federally mandated warranty, emissions-related parts like the catalytic converter will be covered by the firm and so, it is wise to seek opinion from the dealer service department before replacing the converter at one's own cost. It is one of the emission control devices fitted in the exhaust system of a vehicle and the three-way catalyst holds a covering of platinum and rhodium for the reduction of nitrogen oxides and the other part holds a coating of platinum and palladium for the reduction of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. In models produced before the end of 1997 there is one catalytic converter located beneath the car, while in 1998 and the subsequent years, there are two of them: the first one is mounted either directly on the exhaust manifold or secured on it, the second converter is located in the same manner as the only converter of the previous years. The converters function in the same way, but the first converter gets warmer more quickly, therefore, the vehicle does not run on higher emissions during cold starts for a long time. The welds, therefore, require inspections for signs such as leaks, corrosion, or damage every time the car is lifted for other work to be done on the chassis. When the catalytic converter is choked, then an intake vacuum can be introduced to diagnose the choking by measuring the vacuum at idle and after applying the throttle. It may then be necessary to limit the converter or exhaust system if the difference is rather profound. Additional testing for diagnosis of the specific issues requires specialised equipment and thus the defects should be handled by the dealer service department. For removal, make sure the car is securely standing, and unplug the
Oxygen Sensor connectors, whereas, applying penetrant to the bolts is recommended for easy removal of the converter. If the converter has been removed, scrape off any deposits on the flanges of the exhaust pipe and replace the gaskets when reassembling, tighten all bolts. When working with upstream converters, on 1998 and later models, the best thing would be to unscrew the necessary fasteners and also clean the mounting flanges before reversing the process to install the upstream converters.
