Hyundai Excel Axle Shaft
Hyundai Excel Axle Shaft provides driving power to each wheel and allows them to rotate at different speeds for smooth cornering. In the earlier Hyundai sedans, the rear live axle was solid and the differential and Axle Shaft pair was contained in a simple housing. The inner ends of the Axle Shaft were splined and held by C-clips or bolts to roller bearings. Such an arrangement is strong, especially since the Hyundai sedans have a simple suspension. Engineers switched to a halfshaft style Axle Shaft arrangement with constant velocity joints as the Excel line adopted independent layouts. The splined halfshafts slide into the transaxle side gears on the inboard side and into the wheel hubs outboard, their CV joints flexing so the suspension can move without binding. Some front-drive Excel editions even incorporate an intermediate shaft, which helps balance length and reduce torque steer. Hyundai improved the durability of the joint and design of the seal in the later updates. Every Axle Shaft, whether solid or independent, is a forged-steel link that carries the vehicle weight. - Q: How toremove the wheel cover and Axle Shaft on Hyundai Excel?A:To remove the wheel cover and loosen the axle shaft hub nut, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the front wheel. Remove the axle shaft hub nut by bracing a screwdriver across two of the wheel studs. On 1994 and earlier models, remove the two balljoint-to-lower arm bolts/nuts and separate the lower arm from the balljoint. On 1995 and later models, detach the lower arm balljoint from the strut knuckle assembly, detach the steering tie-rod, and detach the stabilizer bar. Press the axle shaft from the hub with a puller, then pull out on the steering knuckle and remove the outer end of the axle shaft from the hub splines. Before removing the axle shaft from the transaxle, drain the transaxle fluid. Carefully insert a prybar between the transaxle case at the case rib and the Constant Velocity (CV) axle shaft joint and pry while supporting the CV joints. Do not insert the prybar too deep to prevent damage to the differential oil seal. Pry the old circlip from the inner end of the axle shaft and install a new one. Lubricate the differential seal with multi-purpose grease, raise the axle shaft into position while supporting the CV joints and insert the splined end of the inner CV joint into the differential side gear. Apply a light coat of multi-purpose grease to the outer CV joint splines, pull out on the strut steering knuckle assembly and install the stub axle in the hub. Connect the balljoint to the lower arm. Install the hub nut using a new large washer underneath it. Grasp the inner CV joint housing and pull out to make sure that the axle shaft has seated securely in the transaxle. Install the wheel and lower the vehicle. Tighten the hub nut to the specified torque and install the wheel cover.
