Hyundai Excel Cylinder Head

The Hyundai Excel Cylinder Head allows fresh air to enter the cylinders and allows burnt gases to exit. Thus, the smooth breathing of the small Hyundai engine endows it with useful punch and efficiency. The Cylinder Head, which is seated at the top of the block, acts as the roof of the combustion chamber and holds the spark plugs, valves, paths for coolant, and seals against the gasket using Torque to Yield bolts that stretch once to provide a uniform clamp load and reliable compression. According to the data, there are two main variants that are offered, a heavy cast iron one and a lighter aluminum version. The choice of Cylinder Head matters. Both of these heads share the same reinforced area in the ports. However, the use of aluminum means lower weight. This also gives better heat dissipation and slight tolerance of higher compression. This means slightly more power from a lighter Excel. Common issues range from worn guides and burnt valves to cracks and blown gaskets. Each of the problems will result in misfires or overheating of the Cylinder Head. When rebuilding a Cylinder Head, using old bolts is likely to limit the seal. Therefore, always use new fasteners to keep a loyal Hyundai Excel running cool and clean. Also, ensure that the Cylinder Head has unrestricted airflow, as every breath equals more horsepower for the spirited Hyundai Excel.

Hyundai Excel Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace a Cylinder Head and Gasket on Hyundai Excel?
    A:
Allow the engine to cool completely before following this procedure. To aid installation, note the locations of all brackets and the routing of hoses and cables before removing them. Position the number one piston at Top Dead Center. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Drain the cooling system and remove the spark plugs. Remove the Intake Manifold and the Exhaust Manifold. Remove the distributor or ignition coil pack, including the spark plug wires. On carbureted models, remove the air cleaner assembly and intake duct, then remove the fuel pump. Remove the Timing Belt and the valve cover. Loosen the cylinder head bolts, 1/4-turn at a time, in the sequence shown until they can be removed by hand. Carefully lift the cylinder head straight up and place it on wooden blocks to prevent damage to the sealing surfaces. If the head sticks to the engine block, dislodge it by placing a block of wood against the head casting and tapping the wood with a hammer. It's a good idea to have the head checked for warpage, even if you're just replacing the gasket. Remove all traces of gasket material from the block and head, ensuring nothing falls into the engine. Clean and inspect all threaded fasteners and ensure the threaded holes in the block are clean and dry. Place a new gasket and the cylinder head in position, installing the new head gasket dry as it can only go on one way due to the dowels. Tighten the cylinder head bolts progressively and in the correct sequence to the specified torque. Install the timing belt. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal. Be sure to refill the cooling system and check all fluid levels. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise slowly by hand through two complete revolutions and recheck the Camshaft timing marks. Start the engine and set the ignition timing. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, checking for leaks and proper operation. Shut off the engine, remove the valve cover, and re-tighten the cylinder head bolts, unless the gasket manufacturer states otherwise. On 1994 and earlier models, recheck the valve adjustment.
