    Q:
How to remove and install Camshaft on V6 Hyundai Santa Fe? Posted by Customer
    A:
If it is necessary to unbolt the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) assembly on the intake camshaft sprockets do not dismantle it-instead, to release it, unbolt the center nut on the extremity of the camshaft. Firstly, bring the engine to the top dead center and then unbolt the engine valve covers and the timing belts or chains. Make sure that marks line up between the sprockets and block on the engine; Camshafts cannot be swapped and should be marked to indicate position. For the first operation, turn the camshaft bearing cap bolts by 1/4 turn and afterward, place the bearing caps in a cardboard box since they may be interchanged; you can even number the bearing caps if possible. Very carefully, extract the camshaft, and it is necessary to mark that in some motors, the cams are taken out jointly since they are connected by a timing chain. Lay the bearing caps side by side and in their correct positions and if necessary, take out the valve hydraulic adjusters and the rocker arms or the lifters and place them in a manner that will enable them to be fitted again. To the camshaft lobes and bearing journals, use the camshaft installation lubricant; put the lower lash adjusters and the lower rocker arms or lifters back into their prior locations. Mount the timing chains around the sprockets moving them into position on the timing marks. Replace each of the cams to its original position ensuring that the timing marks align with the colored links on the chains. Screw in the bearing caps in numerical sequence one after the other starting from the center cap while using only a 1/4 turn on each bolt. If necessary replace the camshaft oil seal with a new one and than put back the other components in the reverse order making sure the timing marks match or the major damages are to be expected. Before starting an engine that has not been used for an extended period make make sure there are no drips or that everything is in order and that it might take sometimes for the valvetrain noise to dissipate if hydraulic valve adjusters were flushed. For valve clearence adjustments remove the valve cover and set number one cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke Departments. Check the clearance with the feeler gauge and write down the measurements of the camshaft lobes and the lifters. Turn the engine a little clockwise and repeat the measurement on the other valves of the engine. Should any of the clearances be beyond specifications remove the camshaft and lifter that is in the wrong position, and measure it using a micrometer. To select the right thickness if any replacement lifter you must apply the above formula, get the correct thickness lifter to be installed, and after the job, it is also important to measure clearances to the recommended range.

    Q:
How to inspect, remove, and install camshafts on four cylinder Hyundai Sonata? Posted by Customer
    A:
Camshafts should always be examined very closely prior to being installed and the end play of the camshaft should always be measured before removing. One can start by removing the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and position the engine at TDI for the number 1 cylinder with the timing marks well aligned. On vehicles built after 2011, untwist the high-pressure fuel pump and the casing of the valve cover and then align the timing belt or chain with the camshaft sprockets. Take off the timing belt or chain, also don't allow the camshaft rotate when you are loosening the sprocket bolts. For vehicles made in 2011 and onwards, do not allow the camshaft to rotate as you relive the tension on the phaser sprocket bolts, then proceed to turn the crankshaft pulley. Check the camshaft endplay and then remove the front camshaft bearing cap and all the other caps in the sequence one at a time arranging the removed caps in sets. Take off the lash adjusters or lifters, bearing all the other parts for any signs of wear and measure the end play of the camshaft using a dial indicator. The bearing surfaces must be visually checked for signs of wear and the camshaft bearing journals as well as lifters must be micrometrical. If any measurement is outside those parameters, the endangered species' part may need to be replaced. Regarding installation, the lash adjusters or lifters should be lubricated, the camshaft placed, and the bearing caps, and bolts tightened while following the sequence. If the car is 2006 or newer change the camshaft oil seal and inspect and adjust valve lash if it is necessary. Correctly position the camshaft sprocket teeth to the timing belt making sure of the alignment marks, also install the camshaft position sensor. For 2006 and later models, if valve clearances are beyond limits use a feeler gauge to adjust, remove the camshaft and lifters to replace the correct thickness. After reassembly clearances should be checked once more before final assembly is done.

    Q:
How to remove and insatall Camshaft on V6 Hyundai Sonata? Posted by Customer
    A:
On the intake camshaft sprockets, do not dismantle VVTi assembly but shift it fully in or out, to effect its removal or installation, unscrew the center bolt of the camshaft. Bring the engine to TDC, pull the valve cover, and take the timing belt for 2.5L or 2.7L engines, and the timing chain for 3.3L engines. When reinstalling the cam sprockets and engine be positive that the two marks made with the sprockets face each other and that camshafts are not inter-changeable. Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts by 1/4 of a turn starting with the outer ones followed by the removal of the bearing caps and carefully pulling out the camshaft. Stack the bearing caps properly, if the valve hydraulic adjusters or lifters can be removed then do so and all the components should be laid neatly to be put back. Next, it is necessary to coat the lobes and bearing journals with camshaft installation lubricant, insert lash adjusters in their initial positions. For 2.5L and 2.7L engines, fit the timing chains astride the sprockets and adjust for the timing marks; in 3.3L engines, align each camshaft as it was before and check the position of the timing marks. Locate and orient the bearing caps sequentially with shaft arrows facing the direction of the drivebelt, gradually tighten bolt in a 1/4 turn along with reaching the torque value. Change camshaft oil seal if required, then replace the other parts in reverse order to the present step, be sure the all timing marks match and you do not want to suffer major engine breakdown. As with any automobile, to ensure that there are no leaks and that everything is in proper working order always start the engine, however valve train noise may linger for a while in older models. For checking valve clearance, twist off the valve cover, position the number one cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke side and then using a feeler gauge, check the clearance of the camshaft lobes to the respective lifters. To measure the remaining valves' clearances, rotate the engine one turn clockwise; if any clearances are beyond the limits, remove the camshaft(s) and lifters and measure the thickness of the lifter head and determine correct thickness for replacement lifters. Obtain the correct thickness lifters from the dealer and after fitting check on the clearance measurements to see if they are standard.
