Hyundai Accent Rocker Arm

The Hyundai Accent Rocker Arm is the lever that converts the camshaft's rotation into the up and down movement that opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves to maintain a seal for combustion. The overhead valve arrangement in Hyundai Accent early pushrod versions places the cam in the block. The lifters and pushrods push on a Rocker Arm which pivots on a stud to push each valve. Generally, these engines applied inexpensive stamped steel Rocker Arm pieces that would wear over many miles. The increasing clearance would lead to a noisier clatter until the component breaks completely if neglected. The shaft of the cam became located on the head in later overhead cam versions of the Hyundai Accent. The cam design got rid of the need for pushrod-mounted rockers and allowed for lighter finger-follower and center-pivot Rocker Arm designs which lowered friction and enabled higher revs. Certain performance-focused trims of the same Hyundai Accent family employed roller-tipped or full-roller styles for their bearings. In doing so, they cut internal friction, helped keep valve timing sharp, and fought heat-induced distortion that can burn valves or get float if the springs go weak. Regardless of configuration, a well-functioning Rocker Arm keeps the valve train in sync to maintain a smooth power delivery and optimum fuel economy.

Hyundai Accent Rocker Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove, inspect, and install the rocker arm assemblies on Hyundai Accent?
    A:
To remove the valve cover, position the number one piston at Top Dead Center and check each rocker arm assembly for identification marks, marking their positions for correct installation; the rear assembly is Intake and the front is Exhaust. Progressively loosen the bolts on each assembly to relieve valve spring pressure without removing the bolts from the shafts, which will hold the rocker arms in place when the shaft assembly is removed. For 1995 and later models, wrap vinyl tape around the rocker arm and hydraulic lash adjuster to prevent the adjuster from falling out. Lift the rocker arm assemblies away from the Cylinder Head with the retaining bolts and washers still in place. Mark the shafts at the Timing Belt end as Intake and Exhaust, noting that the timing belt end has larger chamfered edges. Remove the rocker arms and springs one at a time, keeping components in order for reassembly; on 1994 and earlier models, the exhaust rocker shaft springs are shorter than the intake springs. Clean and inspect all components for wear or damage, checking specific parts based on the model year. Lubricate bearing surfaces with engine assembly lube or clean engine oil, then reassemble the shafts in reverse order, ensuring correct installation of rocker arms based on markings and cylinder numbers. For 1994 and earlier models, adjust the lash adjusters to protrude approximately 0.04 inch. For 1995 and later models, bleed air from the hydraulic lash adjusters by submerging them in diesel fuel and working the plunger. Position the rocker arm assemblies on the cylinder head and alternately tighten the bolts until fully seated, then torque them in stages. Adjust valve clearances for 1994 and earlier models, install remaining parts in reverse order, and run the engine to check for oil leaks and proper operation, adjusting valves while warm for earlier models and addressing any noise from lash adjusters in later models by varying engine speed.
