To eliminate the distributor, you should first disconnect the battery cable at the negative terminal. After that, place the number one cylinder on top of its compression stroke at dead center. Remove coil lead from distributor cap and advance unit vacuum hose(s) in carbureted models. Before unplugging them from distributor cap find your number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal and label all spark plug wires. Release retaining clips and remove the distributor cap ensuring it is positioned well off the distributor body. Disconnect distributor wiring harness and mark distributor flange and cylinder head for alignment purposes. Remove the hold down nut and washer then pull outwards to get rid of excesses if necessary take off rotor and vacuum diaphragm as well. In order to fit back in a new position install vacuum diaphragm and igniter under point of re-assembling the distributor at which point check that number one piston is at top dead center if needed so. Firmly press down rotor onto distributor shaft after greasing replacement O-ring with engine oil or grease before fitting it in place again lubricate new o-ring slightly to one side of mark made on distributor before removal, align marks on cylinder head with those already existing on other parts this should be done gently enough not cause any damage even when marking may not be accurate make sure camshaft drive gear mates properly by inserting distributer while making sure you do so properly align mark on distro flange with center mounting stud loosely attach washer nut tighten slide assembly into locked position using clips finally put back spark plug cables that are removed connect battery cable to negative terminal lastly ensure hub is lightly tight against upper surface of block also ignition timing can be checked adjusted where need be before retightening nut hold-down.
