    Q:
How to check and adjust the exhaust valve and intake valve clearance on Hyundai Elantra? Posted by Customer
    A:
Regular maintenance does not require the valve clearance check and adjustment on 1.6L models. To check and adjust these clearances on such engines, locate number 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke, measure the clearances of indicated valves with feeler gauges and record measurements that exceed specification. Turn the crankshaft one complete revolution and measure the remaining valves. After each valve is measured and its clearance recorded, turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise to bring the cam lobe above first adjusting valve to an upright position. Press down the lifter with a special lifter tool, take out the adjusting shim, measure its thickness using a micrometer gauge, then calculate what thickness of replacement shim should be used in a formula. Choose a shim whose dimensions differ from those for calculated valve clearance by as small as possible margin. Put it in place with light coat of engine oil grease. Check again provided that all items are going well after which reinstall all components removed like spark plugs, valve cover among others. For 2L models, remove engine's covering and spark plug wires then blow off air into respective holes where they have been inserted; this will drive out any foreign particles that may cause an explosion during starting if left there accidentally after removing them from their locations-next step involves taking off such plugs thereby giving way access onto upper timing belt cover followed by removal of valve covers too having set number one piston at top dead center (TDC) under compression stroke condition so that we can use feeler gauge to get clearances from mentioned valves-always remember noting down any out-of-specification readings which could indicate something being wrong somewhere else . Rotate crankshaft once more till other valves can also be measured just like previous ones but before proceeding further shift cam's position until lobes directly opposite opening or closing dents appear higher than rest parts around it-now supposing you put some kind of pressure onto follower by using different-shaped device then extractor tool is employed taking away adjusted washer with micrometer showing shim size so that formula gives a new alternative dimension; although thickness should be chosen looking closest possible original value as much there isn't any bad effect if it gets slightly too tight fitting due slight wear at points where they touch together when something like thin greased paste inserted during putting back similar items except for examining again whether or not gauge might have indicated one which was not recorded earlier on top of reinstalling various parts such as valve covers followed closely behind by inserting spark plugs too.
