- Q: How to remove and install the rear steering knuckle assembly on Hyundai Elantra?A: For 2006 and earlier models, begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands before removing the wheels. Next, remove the rear hub and bearing assembly. If the vehicle has rear drum brakes, detach the clips securing the brake line to the strut and disconnect the parking brake cable from both the parking brake lever and the brake backing plate, noting that the brake shoes can remain attached to the backing plate. Remove the bolts to detach the disc brake caliper assembly or drum brake backing plate from the knuckle, then lift the assembly off and hang it from the strut spring with wire. For models equipped with ABS, remove the rear wheel sensor. Loosen the strut-to-knuckle nuts and disconnect the suspension arms from the knuckle; once the brake assembly is detached, remove the knuckle by taking out the bolts and nuts that attach it to the rear knuckle and suspension arms. After removing the strut-to-knuckle nuts, drive the bolts out with a hammer and punch to detach the knuckle from the strut. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, ensuring all suspension and brake backing plate fasteners are tightened. If the vehicle has rear disc brakes, also tighten the caliper mounting bracket bolts and caliper mounting bolt, noting that the brake hydraulic system will only need bleeding if the brake line was detached. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. For 2007 and later models, particularly those with a 1.4L engine, 2011 and later 1.8L, and 2014 and later 2.0L, which utilize a one-piece solid rear axle that includes the rear knuckles, the axle and knuckles must be replaced as a unit. Start by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands before removing the wheel and releasing the parking brake. For drum brake models, remove the brake line and its bracket from the brake backing plate, then take off the brake drum. For disc brake models, remove the wheel speed sensor and the parking brake cable, then detach the rear upper control arm from the knuckle. For disc brake models, hang the assembly out of the way using wire before removing the disc. Next, remove the trailing arm mounting bolts from the knuckle and then take out the knuckle assembly. Finally, remove the four bolts to separate the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle, and during installation, ensure all fasteners are tightened, raising the suspension with a floor jack under the lower control arm to simulate normal ride height before tightening any pivot bolts.
